Our friend the Fruit Bat ('fruit fly' would be an understatement; I really don’t think this real girl ever goes to straight clubs) was the first to mention the return of Pop Rocks, a party that was kind of like the Thursday night party at Splash except worse music and a worse location (Bar 13 near Union Sq). But they had a better drink special. Apparently members of the Ivy League Crew met Fruit Bat, an alumna of a non-Ivy (thank god), at this party. Anyway, my experience with Pop Rocks was basically pushing through twinks to get to the bar for $1 drinks before 11 and enduring pop music from 1995-2005 for the next hour and a half. Keep in mind it was 2007. Same songs in the same order coupled with same crowd. Every. Week. Last winter, party was moved to the Lower East Side/Chinatown (much easier to get home on the D train), and the music and scene got much better. But it closed down early this year.
I got an invite on facebook the week before from Tighty Whitey, and I put myself down as a maybe. I wasn’t excited at all for Pop Rocks’s return to Bar 13, but when I saw everyone else’s enthusiasm, I figured it was worth a shot. Hell, maybe something worth blogging about will happen.
Long story short: it was like traveling back to 2007. But the music was still all 1995-2005 (I believe I counted 3 exceptions the whole night). On the bright side, all the girls were there and we got to make fun of the go-go with no rhythm and no ass. Until the one guy in the bar who was in my target demographic went to drool over him. Great.
Among those who made an appearance was the 24-Year-Old Muscle Bear from DC we had met over Memorial Gay Weekend. Also scene was PhD (Pretty hot and Dark), Med School Mess's roommate and fellow med school student. Now, I've met PhD more than a few times at parties, and I always thought he was very cute and sweet. But with talk of possible not-quite-out-of-the-closet-ness, I never even attempted to go there. Anyway, not long after he arrives I see 24YOMB and PhD getting into some pretty serious grinding. Is ASFKAB trying to get in on this action, or is he babysitting his friend? I'll have a PhD sandwich on whole wheat Bear to go! Hot (shit, if I'm not gonna enjoy any of the man meat myself, I well within my rights to let my mind wander... and to watch)!
Unfortunately, my patience with the venue overpowered my curiosity, and I was outtie just after midnight. But did I mention that I managed to get home in 35 minutes because my transit transfers were all flawless (which was a good thing b/c I needed my rest for the following night's huge Halloween party!)? Yeah!

Well, one change: $1 drinks became $2 drinks. That's quite some inflation!
you left a comment on my blog which I just noticed since nobody ever reads it and I wanted to say Thanks! I also wanted to tell you that you are basically living my dream life right now and you can sing! Is there no end to your apparent awesomeness?!?!
Truly, thanks for the compliments! It's not a dream by any means, but it could be worse, that's for sure. I'm lucky in that I have family here that helped me get started in NYC. But if you're willing to work hard enough and sacrifice enough and not run home to mommy when shit gets tough, this (and a lot fucking better) could be your reality.
And yes, there is an end to my "apparent awesomeness". It's 30.
Joking... Joking!
Pop sucks. I'm just sayin'.
How. Dare. You.
