For whatever reason, I found myself craving nightlife on a Wednesday. I texted TTT (since we could ride home on the same train) and he insisted that I come to Therapy (the bar) for Don Juan from San Juan’s birthday. I really abhor Therapy, but Peppermint was hosting the infamous Cattle Call show. I knew I’d either be unbelievably impressed or utterly disgusted with the talent.
Numerous college shows with various technical difficulties have taught me that a good host(ess) knows the value of an entertaining stall. One of the acts required an extra microphone, so Peppermint turned to the audience to fill the set-up time.
"Any straight people in the house?" Girls cheer. "Okay let me rephrase that: any straight MEN in the house?"
A cute nerd was outed in the back, and Peppermint pulled him to the front of the show. I felt so bad for the guy because drag queens used to scare the snot out of me when I first started going out on the scene (until I was 20). When the straight accepted the invitation to touch her leg, things started getting downright hilarious.
I gotta hand it to her: it's hard to look that glamorous sideways.
For once, all of the talent in the show was amazing (in one way or another). And it was truly a night of sing-a-longs.
Then Peppermint did this song called "Gutter Girl". Or was it "Girl from the Gutter"? Anyway, the audience was all about this song. I could tell you what happened, but the visual is SO much better.
Yes, after the wig fell off, Pep grabbed my camera and took the following Myspace pictures.
I didn't know my camera would take pictures while filming. BTW, I have no idea whether she would use these on Myspace or if she even has a Myspace page. Whenever someone takes a picture by extending their arm and turning the lens back on themselves, I like to call that "myspacing it."
Every time I go, the show ends way too late, and immediately following is some of the most fun pop music you'll find in NYC. Did I mention I didn't get to bed til 2? Yeah.
And now for something totally different: click here to check out my day at Folsom Street East (NYC's Pride-Week Leather Fest)

OMG--a drag queen without a wig is like tonic without Gin!!
And wait, is anyone really still on Myspace???
xoxo
That's not the first time I've seen her with the wig off. I have a feeling it was a planned part of the show. But she gets props for shaking it up!
Oh, and the President is on myspace:

FIERCE!!!!!
Just when I thought the President was ahead of the curve...
I *love* me some “Girl from the Gutter”! I think this remix hit the clubs in 2000, about 1 year before I started going out. :( I woulda been a hot sweaty dancin mess on that dance floor.
