EXCLUSIVE: “AMERICAN, Cute boy next door. NOT no GodDamned Nigger!” (On Racism in Porn at CorbinFisher.com)

Back in '09, I did a post on the Death of Dude Vu, which came about because of the efforts of Marc J. Randazza, General Counsel at the gay/bi adult media company CorbinFisher.com (you may have seen some of the stories about the company's recent crack-down on illegal downloading). He saw the post and left a frank comment that that certainly didn’t win him any friends among the readers. So when I got his email telling me he had some information that he wanted TheBlackoutBlog to share exclusively, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. When we finally got a chance to catch up, the story that he told me was, without a doubt, worth the wait.

If you’re a regular follower of CorbinFisher.com, you’ve noticed their model Carter. For those of you not familiar, Carter’s got the typical slim/muscular build you’d expect from a Corbin Fisher model. Six pack, gorgeous smile, the whole package. Except he’s black. And let me tell you: CorbinFisher.com is not exactly known for the diversity of its models (right, LeNair Xavier?).

Now, I know we all have our preferences and attributes we’re attracted to, but what happened after Carter’s scenes were posted on the website was beyond shocking.

emails courtesy of Marc J. Randazza

These are 2 of 7 emails that Randazza sent to me, all from the same guy (whom they'd dubbed “Rob”), all using the n-word.

I spoke with Randazza and Chip Carter, Director of Marketing for CorbinFisher.com (not to be confused with the model Carter), and they were equally disgusted with the fact that a member of our community would speak so hatefully towards a member of the same minority group: “You’re so racist! How can you be gay?” And this is just the tip of the iceberg: according to them, there’s a new Rob every month. It’s something the upper management at CorbinFisher.com doesn’t take lightly.

Pete’s Attic, a podcast from Corbin Fisher’s website, discussed the issue in an episode called “Rob, the Amazing Racist” posted 10/22/10.

Corbin Fisher: “In the first 4 hours of the video going up, 25% of the votes… on the video are 1 star [out of 5].”

Pete: “We can track who’s voting on what video, and, obviously, what they’re voting… And you [Fisher] noticed how there were several people who had never voted before, but all of a sudden, when Carter’s updates when on, it was almost immediately a 1-star vote.”

Fisher: “They singled him out, nailed him on each of his updates.”

CorbinFisher.com decided to strike the 1-star votes on Carter’s video from those who hadn’t rated any other videos, as the “agenda voting” was seen as inappropriate and unfair.

After this podcast was posted on CorbinFisher.com, Liberty Media, of which CorbinFisher.com is a subsidiary, received a hand written letter from Rob, whose account had been suspended. His handwriting is a bit hard to read, but he states:

“…he got one of his little toadies, “Pete”, the guy that runs the radio portion of the site to put up a tacky, mean and hateful radio session about me entitled, “Rob, The Amazing Racist”… basically, it was CF, the guy “Pete” and some woman labeling me, judging me, laughing at me and making fun of me! It was like a slap in the face.”

Yeah, Rob? Now you know how it feels. Except you chose to be an asshole; Carter didn’t choose to be black.

I’m actually at a loss for words regarding this situation. The fact that anyone would throw around a hateful word that was used while blacks were unjustly attacked by police dogs, raped by slave masters and lynched by angry mobs absolutely boggles my mind. And as Randazza and Chip Carter told me, he’s just a representation of what they’ve been seeing from multiple members for the past several months.

So what’s the deal here? Should CorbinFisher.com stick to their “all-American” white prototypes for which they’re so well known if that’s what their audience wants? Is it worth a whole race debate over just to add a different element into their erotic menu? Leave your opinions in the comments section.

The problem with Corbin Fisher and most of these other companies with their "all-American" white prototypes is that they did not START with diversity. So when they finally decide to show SOME degree of the melting pot that is America instead of catering to those in-breeders who live by the code of "white like me", the in-breeders get their big ol' granny panties in a bunch. In short, Corbin Fisher and all other sites brought negative reactions like those of "Rob" on themselves.

Yes, well SAID Marc. Well SAID. Keyword here is "SAID". Marc Randazza statement is him being a true lawyer --- all TALK to cover up a mess his client made. My other comment explains the rest.

Now if Marc wants to clear up any misconceptions that I know I don't have, he knows where to find.

This guy's comments are beyond disgusting, but it looks like the corporate team did a responsible job in filtering out the obviously racist ratings and suspending the asshole's account.

I can’t even believe I just read that. I never thought that there were people in this world STILL thinking this way. That was beyond REDIC. I'm not familiar with the site, but decided to have a look and just from the front page you can tell just what time it is with the site--and I can deal with tailoring to a certain crowd but (I feel that most American society does this) whether we choose to notice it or not. HOWEVER, if you are a minority group discriminating against another minority group with words that should be unspeakable, it just makes me sad. UNTHINKABLE. I can’t even I just read that.

I can't believe that in 2011, we still come up against this issue. Yes, I know there are many who are not into black men, but if you're not into them, be respectful and check on something you're into. Showing how much of an asshole you can be is not attractive to anyone, and showing that you have no respect is even worse. I hope CorbinFisher continues to showcase men of all types and all races. The gay community is made up of all types and we need to be able to see all of who we are.

I never liked their website to begin with. Solely because of the lack of men of color. Now that I see those comments and reactions about Carter, it only makes me want to stay away even more. I know the reactions they got don't reflect the opinion of CorbinFisher.com and their employees, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I do applaud the website though for welcoming a man of color into the fold though. I hope they continue down that road. :)

I'm pretty sure they will be. Check out Marc's comment (the first comment I transcribed)

Looking at the website, I find it shameful that they don't even have a pic of Carter on there. It's all white boys. Sigh.

These comments are blatantly racist, and I don't think that Corbin Fischer should even dignify them with a response. Why would they change their policy of including a black man, just because some bigots write some nasty letters? But, to be perfectly honest, I find it a bit hypocritical for Corbin Fischer to claim righteous indignation over this issue. In my opinion, this guy is a very typical Corbin Fischer model in every respect. He's muscular, he young, he's got a cute symmetrical face, he's smooth. Even if their website starts including men of every color - black, white, latino, arab, desi, asian, native american, etc. - they're still guilty of discrimination. All their models still look basically the same. They're the same "type." Racism is just one form of prejudice. I don't think that Corbin Fischer should condone racism, but even if they include some diversity in their models, they are still catering to an audience with certain prejudices/preferences.

TheBlackoutBlog said...

Here that, Corbin? No targeting your audience! Get some bears and Bel-Ami twinks on there!

Noah Steiner Attacks said...

Your point is well taken... but what's the answer?

Martin said...

If I were in charge of the site, I'd be making a point to include more non-white models ASAP... just to make a point. And the more complaints I got, the more they'd be featured.

But then, if I were in charge of the site, it wouldn't have been as pale as it was to start with...

Duh: to start our own porn company!
T-BoB Attacks media.

Noah Steiner Attacks said...

Fair enough. But if we're really going to create a site that promotes inclusiveness, I must insist that we also feature women. Oh, and we must make it available to people in any socioeconomic group that doesn't have access to computers or internet access.

It will be the Shakespeare in the Park of porn.

(Wait, Shakespeare in the Park is free, right?)

Nice job reporting!

Wow! I'm shocked but I'm not surprised. In 2011, these people are still out there, and in larger numbers now that we have a black President. (I've seen reports that hate group membership has increased since, & presumably b/c, Obama won office). We've made tons of progress over the past 50 years but racism is far from being solved.

As for CF, I've always considered it to be the porn version of Abercrombie & Fitch: MINORITIES NEED NOT APPLY! As Jess humorously stated, "you know what time it is," after looking at CF's site or their videos. Speaking of A&F, are their models still all white all the time? I haven't seen their stores lately. I also seem to recall that A&F got sued (class action?) for discriminating against its minority personnel! (I'm not sure what came of it, but to me, the lawsuit was further validation of my hunch that something was not right with A&F.)

I'm not saying that Corbin Fisher discriminates against its employees or anything like that. But LeNair took the words out of my mouth: they catered to clients who wanted white all the time and then wonder why some rabid racists come out of the woodwork when non-whites are added to the model roster. CF fed into racist beauty standards...and the chickens have come home to roost.

TheBlackoutBlog said...

You have effectively integrated 2 of my favorite indulgences: porn and chicken.

On a vaguely related topic: Abercrombie also took some heat for a t-shirt they sold in their stores about 10 years ago. Several groups found it to be stereotypical and anti-Asian. It featured 2 brothers who owned a laundromat called "Wong Brothers Laundry." And the infamous tagline: "Two Wongs Make It White." The shirt was immediately pulled off store shelves when groups started to protest.

There's nothing hotter than an multi-racial orgy. Just picture the models from an United Colors of Benetton billboard going at it. Anyone that does not get turn on by this, does not deserve to be gay. Fuck Rob (and not in the sexual way, eww).

Porn is purely for fantasy, so looking for it to symbolize equality in any way isn't something I'd expect. That being said, for better or worse, sites like the one you highlighted are merely a microcosm of the way plenty of people think - but don't admit in public. I'm assuming that it's a very successful site, since everyone's up in arms about it. No matter how hard they try to spin it; his account was SUSPENDED, but not DELETED. Money talks.

I am black and I gotta say what about CoCo Dorm and Flava Works that have little to no other races other than black on there?

Ctmany said...

Yes and there is a NAACP but no NAAWP. Sounds like you missed the college course called White Privilege 101.

TheBlackoutBlog said...

There's something to be said for that.

But I would say that because of power imbalances in America, there's not as much need/desire for whites to see themselves represented in minority media as there is for minorities to see themselves represented in mainstream media.

Frankly, i never even noticed CF until Carter showed up.  It's pretty clear the guys he plays with are as into him as I am.  Just because somebody like Rob is gay doesn't mean he comes with values befitting a human.  I had an ex who absolutely hated African American men.  It turned out to be an issue with size and his inferiority complex in general.  Racism, sadly, doesn't surprise me, neither does it surprise me to step on a slug in the garden when i'm walking barefoot, it's just hard to scrape off the slime.  Takes some work, but it will happen in time.
